Extra Credit Assignment: Pompeii

The National Gallery of Art in Washington DC had an exhibit last year on the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. They have put together an interesting online exhibit that directly relates to our study on Roman Art. I would like for you to view the online exhibit and write a one page reflection statement specifically adressing the art historical implications of the rediscovery of Pompeii and the United States' link to the ancient city. If you choose to do this assignment, your reflection statement is due on Tuesday, October 4th. You will receive up to 10 extra points on your Etruscan-Roman test.

When viewing the site, you have to use the arrows on the right to scroll up and down the page...I'm not sure why!

Form, Texture & Greek Art

Greek art was all about creating form and so is our unit on form and texture. We are using clay to create relief collages of architectural elements. You will draw your collage first and then re interpret it in clay. Remember all of the clay working terms we are learning! Make sure to ALWAYS wedge your new clay before you begin making your low relief and ALWAYS score and slip when attaching clay to clay!

After the clay has dried to bone dry, we will bisque fire the greenware in the kiln to cone 04. After your projects have been bisque fired, we will glaze our reliefs!

 

 

Hard Slab Containers

 
 
 

We will continue our exploration of handbuilding with hard slab construction. Using your previous sketchbook designs of geometric slab containers, you will first select the container you want to make. You will first have to roll a slab of clay on the slab roller and measure and cut all the slabs needed to make your container. Is your container a cube? You will need 6 cut pieces. A pentagon? 7 cut pieces. All of your cut clay slabs should measure the same so they can be constructed together. Slabs need to set up before construction. Make sure to score and slip well so the clay slabs hold together. You may either cut off a lid or make a seperate lid for your box.

Texture is the name of the game when it comes to decoration with this project. All surfaces should be covered with texture. Make sure to leave the lid on the box each day so your whole project will dry evenly and at the same rate. This will also help us avoid unwanted warpage.

We will glaze our slab containers with any of the 05 glazes.

Etruscan & Roman Art

We will spend roughly a week and a half on our Etruscan and Roman Art unit. Study guides and 10 Q Cards are due Monday, September 26th. Our test will be on Wednesday, September 28th.

Plaster Casting

 

For our second breadth project, we are creating a sculpture using the process of casting. You will create a clay mold where you press some sort of object repeatadly into the clay surface. When your mold is done, we will make a tray out of posterboard to hold your mold and the wet plaster. Now we are ready to pour! Mix up just the amount of plaster you need and pour into your mold. When the plaster is dry, you should be able to remove it from your clay mold relatively easily. We will make three plaster casts of your mold and then assemble those casts together to create your sculpture. Your critique on this project will be Thursday, September 29th.

Concentration #2

Your critique on your second concentration piece will be on Thursday, September 29th. If you finish ahead of time, go on and start working on your 3rd project profile for concentration #3! Project Profile #3 is due Thursday, October 6th.
